Backsberg Estate Cellars

Beyond the wine world, Backsberg Estate Cellars is well-known for its 3 award-winning potstill brandies, produced under the label of Sydney Back Brandy. Named after the farm’s second-generation owner, each of these products is a true celebration of the potstill category. Brandy distillation at Backsberg commenced in 1991, under the careful guidance of then-owner Sydney. This saw the re-introduction of a practice that had been in existence on the estate 150 years prior. In 1994, the first blend was released into the market. This blend received noticeable acknowledgement in a global context and was awarded the title of “the Best Brandy in the World” at the International Wine and Spirits Competition held in London in 1995. This initial blend is still available to the public, albeit in limited quantities. For something a little less rare but still of superior quality, Backsberg has two stupendous options, holding both a 10 and 15-year-old blend within the collection. Both have been crafted in a similar cognac-like style to the first distillation. Sydney Back Brandy is something truly special. It has heart, soul and a bit of punch, just like its namesake.

Boplaas Family Vineyards

Our history of distilling fine pot still brandy dates back to 1880, with the first order of casks was sent to Cape Town harbour by ox-wagon for delivery to London. After the repeal of distilling licenses in the early 1920’s, Boplaas™ copper pot still lay dormant for almost 70 years until it was fired up again in 1989. Five years later, in 1994, Boplaas released the very first estate brandy: the Boplaas 5-Year-Old Pot Still Estate Brandy. Early 1994 on a flight from George to Johannesburg, oupa Danie Nel landed on a seat next to Nelson Mandela. Danie Nel was a friendly and highly sociable person and they instantly became friends and maintained contact afterwards. Later that year Nelson Mandela phoned Danie and ordered some of the Boplaas 5-Year-Old Pot still Brandy to be served at the presidential inauguration banquet. The fertile alluvial soil and climatic conditions allow Colombard to thrive in the Calitzdorp, ideal for the crafting of the finest rabat (distilling wine), which is high in natural acidity and with delicate aromatics. Our rabat is then double distilled in an old copper pot still and allowed to slowly mature in Limousin oak casks, prior to blending and bottling unrefined, unfiltered and by hand. Due to dry warm summers, cold winters and generally low humidity, the environment is ideal for the maturation of brandy, resulting in a far more concentrated spirit and final blend. Brandy production at Boplaas is truly a craft undertaking with only a few barrels bottled annually. The latest addition to our distilled product range is the Boplaas Whiskey, a blended cask aged grain whiskey to be enjoyed on the rocks or with a mixer.

The unique Louiesenhof Brandy was distilled in our antique 131-litre German kettle. The 30% Brandy component was blended with great skill to perfection with 70% wine spirits by Jos Le Roux, master distiller and one of South Africa`s Brandy legends. The final product is elegant and smooth, with a character true to tradition.

Mons Ruber

How about coming and tasting wine at a farm that has been producing wine since the mid-19th century? Well, the Mons Ruber Winery on the way to Oudtshoorn has been doing just that. Not only will you find Port, Cabernet and sweet wine, but you can enjoy potstill brandy. The estate has a very long history of distillation. The brandy is distilled using traditional methods – i.e. over an open outdoor fire, which dates back to 1936. If you’re lucky enough to visit during the distilling period you might get to observe the process. You’ll enjoy your tasting in a building erected in 1854 that has also been a tollhouse and a hotel! Enjoy a glass of brandy while marvelling over the Oregon pine and Yellowwood ceilings.

Slow maturation in French oak barrels has enhanced the distinctive characteristics of the TOKARA Ten Year Old Potstill Brandy. The aromas abound with and subtle complex notes of fresh vanilla, dried fig, peach and raisin fruits. The floral potpourri aromas and rich jasmine and orange blossom notes add to the complexity of this brandy. The palate delivers mellow rounded flavours of caramel, dried apricots and a spicy pepper and saffron finish. This spirit is one of distinctive character with a fine length and depth of aftertaste.

Tucked away in a corner, at the end of a dirt road leading out of Wellington in the Boland, you will find the rustic, unassuming organic estate, Upland. You could be forgiven for thinking you were in Tuscany, as apart from the Hawekwa mountain range, which cradles the estate, there is a similar wonderfully rustic and timeless feel to this part of the world. Upland – the name comes from the English for Boland – is a small QCS certified fruit and wine farm that has been producing world-class organic Brandy, Grappa, Port and Cabernet Sauvignon for over a decade. Upland’s organic Grappa won the ‘World’s Best Grappa’ at the Guldkorken International Competition in Stockholm and its list of international and local awards is impressive.

Its warm golden hues announce a generous nose of fruit and vanilla. A soft velvety palate of dried fruit and coffee ends on a lingering note 15-year-Old Fine Cask Reserve: Another regular international medalist, it shows the intensity of fruit characters with a twist of citrus and a delectable trace of chocolate. Rich in colour and flavour, its honeyed- citrus aromas unfurl to reveal a full palate laced with sweet oak spices. A creamy texture ends in a lingering but satisfying clean finish 20 Year Old Collectors Reserve: twice awarded the trophy for ‘ Worldwide Best Brandy’ at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
